Default ---> Can I fit a standard 850 T-5 engine to a T-5R?

Hi guys,

I was under the impression that the only difference in the power of the 850 T-5 and the T-5R was due to the ECU. I have a T-5R and was wondering if I could replace the block (only the block - i.e. still use the T-5R ecu and ancillaries etc) with one from a standard T-5? (the block in mine has overheated, causing a substantial water leak, and not sure of any other damage - hence wanting just to put a known good engine in instead).

If anyone has any information I would be most grateful as I really want to save this car as it is in fabulous condition

Many thanks,

Yoda960

Thanks for that mate, I was hoping that would be the case. Just had a gander at the project thread - it looks like its coming on nicely!

Are the 850 T5 engines all the same, i'm sure I read there is an earlier variant/later ones? Or is that to do with the turbo/turbo manifold and not the actual block itself?

the engines are almost the same in the earlier ones. main differences are in the Turbo pipework, and the inlet manifold. THe earlier one like mine, does not have the dreaded Vac line near the power steering pump

There are some minor mechanical differences but it's mostly anciliaries, they changed stuff like the timing belt tensioiners around 95/96, the earlier engines had a different intercooler pipework but that's about it.

My car's coming along slowly, being hampered by a lack of cash really, should have some more updates for the thread later in the week...hopefully,lol.
