Overheating
Hi , I have a Volvo V40 1.9 TD. when I start it up it will drive for a while and then overheat, if I then turn off the engine and restart it goes to normal temperature. When it is overheating the coolant comes out of the pressure cap, obviously I am then loosing coolant and eventually overheats again. Has any body got any ideas. thanks

It could be your thermostat failed and not opening. Be worth testing it or just change it as not a high priced item.

Have you looked at the coolant for traces of oil and checked to see if there is coffee cream in the engine oil ??
It's probably just an Iffy thermostat or lots of air in the system if was fiddled with recently. The vent hole should be at the top of the thermostat and gen Volvo ones tend to fail open rather than shut.

Couple things it could be... I'd start troubleshooting it in this order...
1. air in the system, diesels have a air valve on the heater matrix pipe at the back of the engine to the bulkhead and one on the main water pipe its under the top intercooler hose. Undo them to check if there's any air while the engine is running. As soon as fluid appears close the valve. If there's no air then check the coolant cap, it's rare but possible its failing and causing pressure problems. Finally I'm guessing the water pump has failed. When was it last changed? |
