V70 D5 open the bonnet warning on dashboard
Hi, today while I was driving the warning light popped out and it said open the bonnet, but after few seconds, when I put to neutral gear it disappeared. What do you think, anything to worry about? Was it just the high temperature of the engine? Volvo V70 D5 2010

There's a micro switch on the drivers side latch under the scuttle panel at the front of the bonnet. If you find the 2 lead connector by the right hand headlight and disconnect it you can insert a paper clip bent into a 'U' into the feed side and this will make the circuit and fool the ECU that the switch has closed the circuit. Make sure to insulate the exposed part of the paperclip to avoid short circuits to earth. This will give you time to deal with the problem at your leisure. I sprayed copious amounts of WD40 into the latch recess and it freed up the sticking micro switch. If that doesn't work it's apparently a very fiddly job to access the latch and replace it. If you can't get the part in Lithuania, you might have to either fit your own bell push micro switch on the scuttle panel where the bonnet can operate it, or just leave the circuit closed with the paperclip and do without a bonnet warning light.

Probably you miss understood me🙂 the warning doesn't say that the bonnet is open. It said to open the bonnet and there was a red triangle but just for couple of seconds till I switched the gear. My worries are that the engine cooling fan might not work or something else causes the high temperature.

Sorry I misunderstood. I've never seen an instruction to open the bonnet! It does sound like the ECU thinks the engine is overheating but in that case if there was something wrong I'd have thought that there would be other warnings directly relating to the overheating.

I think message says just 'Open bonnet' - can't remember and can't find any example quickly.
Which simply means that bonnet sensor got activated and most likely is playing up. See the other thread: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=279884 |

I suspect that the problem here is a language problem: Swedish/English/Lithuanian!
I'm going to say that I'm sure the problem is a sticking microswitch on the right side of the bonnet slam panel causing the |ECU to think that the bonnet is open and it is warning you accordingly. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=279884 where I posted my experience will apply. Liberal spraying of a good quality penetrating and lubricating spray may solve the issue and the paper clip work around will stop the warning. If it's intermittent it will mean that the switch isn't entirely seized and lubrication should solve the problem.

Further to this- I am having the same 'Bonnet open' message. I have tried WD40 to no avail so far.
Is this the correct part to buy, ie I assume it houses the sensor / switch for the ECU? : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volvo-S80...4AAOSwS4heynOD |

Had the same a few months ago, as @Tatsfield here recommends I've also tried silicon spray and WD40. Which seems to help a little, but came back permanently. Ended up inserting a small wire into the plug and re-plugged besides the front lamp, so nothing is hanging up.
I'm also convinced dashboard message just states the bonnet IS open, (even if not), but does not instruct you to MAKE bonnet open. |

Yes, no question it's not asking you to open the bonnet
I might try the short circuit method but if the part I linked is correct I might just buy that and replace it. |
