Default Volvo Roof Box

Hi All

I am going to get a roof box soon.
My other half insist on Volvo badge one..

I am contemplating between the Sport 200 and Weekender.

Any feedback on the two models is appreciated.

We have the Thule 16 cu ft which I think is identical to the Sport Time 200. We used it to camp in our 2004 V70 (2 adults and 3 dogs). Nothing smaller would do with the V70.

We have since gotten a 2007 XC90 3.2 FWD, but have not tried the box on the XC90. I think you will need a step ladder to access any roof box on the XC90. We have camped with our dogs for 2 or 3 night trips with the XC90 and get all our stuff inside the XC90. At night we sleep in the XC90 with the dogs and move our gear to the front seats and outside. However, we pack light.

Thanks for the feedback.

I got 3 kids. If we go camping, with all the tents, cooking utensils and gears etc, a bit tight especially if I need one last row seat. The one boy I got likes it on his own at the back, with Nintendo, PSP, etc

Concern is the height of the Sport Time 200. I don't have issue with the stepping up to reach it but just will it be too high with the XC90. Will it look ugly.

The Weekender seems the ideal size. But hate that it is black and "bat mobile" look.

I have used a Kamei Corvara roof box on an XC90. It's true, loading and unloading is difficult. I bought a set of small steps for about £10 from B&Q and they fold up nicely and stow them in the boot. They are also handy for when you wash the roof of the car!

The box doesn't look out of place on the car and it wasn't too noisey at 70mph. In fact, when I took the box off and left the Volvo rectangular bars on, it was then annoyingly noisey (whistling sound) above 30mph.

I was planning on buying a Thule, but when I picked up my XC90 from Harratts, they had a weekender there, ex-display for just £100. As the car had lost it's mats, I got the price down on the box to £50, so snapped it up.

Does the job great, but yep, the boots pretty big anyhow.

I was wrong on which Thule roofbox we have--it may be 16 cu ft or even 19 cu ft, and it is long, looks like an Atlantis series with a silver top and darker base. We got it at a local dealer 5 years ago. I think it is one size down from the largest Altantis available at the time (largest 21 cu ft or 590 L?). IIRC the dealer didn't have the largest in stock and we were leaving the next day.

This box was perfectly proportioned for our 2004 V70, but I've never tried it on the XC90. I'm 5'10" and I can get things in and out on the V70, but my 5'3" wife struggles. It would be impossible for her to access it on the XC90.

I have a trailer hitch on the V70, but not on the XC90. If one were doing any extended camping with kids and gear it seems to me that a light sport trailer of 40 cu ft to 80 cu ft would be much better. Of course, towing a trailer increases the trouble and the risk. It has got to greatly limit options for emergency manoevering. See http://www.letsgoaero.com/Products.asp?Pcat=3. I do occasionally tow a light utility trailer to haul construction materials and trash, but have not done so on long camping trips.

It seems to me that if one had a US style receiver hitch that one of the rear cargo boxes would be a great combination of convenience and low aerodynamic resistance. See the 20 cu ft rear carrier: http://www.letsgoaero.com/Products.asp?Pcat=2 or the much larger 34 cu ft model which might fit on an XC90.

Take a look here,

Sorry I'm obscuring half the car, it's the only photo I've got with the box on.
Taken on the seabed in the middle of the Bay of Biscay - extreme or what!
No really, there's an island called Noirmoutier-en-l'Ξle with a road to the mainland that's only passable when the tide is out.
