Oh dear, why on earth do Volvo introduce the EGR flow before the turbo? On my previous car it came in at the intake manifold, well after the turbo!

The spot is in the exhaust gas which drives the turbo and this is where the variable vanes are so they can get sooty. The egr get sooty and the pipe work after it tends to get gunky as the sooty exhaust gas then mixes with the fresh air which has the crank case breather fumes in it (oil basically)
In conclusion the turbo it self will be clean, with a perhaps a light coating of oil on the intake side and on the exhaust/drive side it will have a carbon build up from the exhaust fumes. How much will depend on the car and the way it is driven. Cars driven at faster speeds for longer tend to get the turbo really hot and this reduces the build up plus the engine is running cleaner as well.
