I had no replies from anyone with a used one. I found 2 used ones on eBay but the bids went high on both of them, above the price of one from China so gave them a miss. Then I received information of VOL-PCR for older cars and obtained the software. Just need to get a VAG COM OBD2 lead with an FTDI chip and will be sorted.

We don't have compulsory OBD compliance until about 2005 on our cars.

still not sure which one to go for, a friend of mine just got one from china on ebay, it works fine on his v40 but it wasnt reading anything on my s40 1.9d there doesnt seem to be any communication

Try it by manually inputting the VIN (they can't read the diesel's), it might work then - no promises
