It's not the oem filter thats restrictive it's the airbox, putting a cone filter behind the grill is not a great idea, they don't react well to water, if you use a cone filter your better off putting the filter in the stock airbox position and then feeding cool air to that position.

BSR make a sports filter to fit the standard air box.

It costs £35 but it is washable.

Hi,

The original box for the airfilter, it may be worth mentioning, has its own intake pointing to the front of the car.
A 2.5 inch inlet. No direct feed to it and takes the air from... well, the engine bay. Admitedly from where cooler air may be coming in.
However, the box also has another cooling inlet to cool the box itself, this is taken from the wheel arch on my 940 (see my photos) as to where the box was located.
So the box is cooled slightly.

But yes, pumping up the air input/density will have a minimal effect until the exaust is beefed up to match the possible increase you can get from such a filter...

You can get, if you really want to go over the top, a filter system that also has a power fan to boost the amount of air being pushed towards the engine. Whether they work, and what performance gains you may get, I do not know and haven't seen any figures for.
Cost a bomb though...

Des. . .
