My reasining is you don't know what make or grade is in then using the 10-40 will start the process of getting the good oil in and after 3k miles drop and use fully synthetic but don't use 0-30 it runs past the cylinders

I've used the Shell Helix and "Quantum" on my 99 T5 which is Castrol and had no problems or ill effects with either oil.
I usually put 5/40 fully synth in but as I'm not paying for it, the cost doesn't matter to me.
Engine is quiet on start up with this stuff but it does consume a bit if I'm honest.
If you change the oil often enough though you could happily get away with 10/40

Smile The ONLY Choice!

Hi Mate,
There's only one choice that's Shell Helix 10w-40 IMHO. The difference it made to my car was truly amazing! - Runs better, goes better, is far more responsive! - Will never use anything else from now on.

Managed to blag my way in at Euro Car Parts, and got it for Trade at £16.50+VAT per 5 litres (total £19.80) - Knockout!
Regards.

Great, thanks for that. Just checked the V70 TDi as well and shell list the same oil, 10w40 part synthetic. I've always used 5w30 in that before but get a bit of blue smoke on start up and the odd puff while running so I did wonder before about going to a slightly thicker oil. And if they're both using the same oil I can buy in bulk, 15 litres for £63 which should be good for an oil change each and more than ebough for top ups in between.

Only other thing now is the tool to get the housing off to change the oil filter cartridge on the T5, sounds like it's 86mm with 16 flutes but if the price isn't too crazy I will just get it from Volvo so I know, in theory, it's the right one.

Thanks for all your help guys

Hi,
Well I suppose this is a good thing for those who live miles from anywhere, but the carriage charge takes the shine off when compared to me swanning into Euro Car Parts locally, and getting the (real Mackoy) Shell oil for £19.80/5 litres. Or don't you agree?
Regards.

Yeah, it works for anyone living right next to one of those stores but a lot of us don't.

I live 15 miles from the closest one (in Cambridge) so 30 miles round trip. I much prefer paying the £4:58 that I paid for getting 10 liters Shell HX7 10-40 (£18:98 each 5 liters [litres the way you guys spell] incl vat) delivered to my door from Moto-Oil.

No wear and tear on the car, I didn't add to the congestion and I sat at home and enjoyed myself rather than in never ending queues in Cambridge.

That's a very good price you paid for that oil, I will look up Moto-Oil for future reference, thank you. And yes, we do spell litre the correct way!
