Default XC90 Oil leak advice

Hi all, looking for some advice please.

I have a 2017 ('66 plate) xc90 D5 105K miles. Owned it just under a year and been running without issue. 2 weeks ago, low oil light came up and a week later car advised i need to top up 1 litre, which i did. I am aware there are some issues with this model consuming oil but 1l over 11 months c.8000 miles seems more than reasonable to me.

Sent it for yearly service today and they have advised there is an oil leak with oil all over the engine and c.£360 to investigate.

I do have a warranty (for what they are worth) but they will only cover a specific repair i.e. once the issue has been identified.

Not sure whether to
1. Leave it... I'm a bit tight at the moment and could like with 1l every 8K miles
2. Investigate now whilst my warranty is still active so at least there is a chance the repair will be covered

What would you do

thanks

Fix what you can, while you still have the warranty.

If that really is the case I would certainly investigate and fix it.
How happy are you to literally get your hands dirty? I'd clean off the engine as best I can and then monitor it closely until I find where the oil is escaping from, not just where it accumulates and gets spread around by the air flow. Google will give you ideas or you could pay an independant garage but don't be heavy handed when washing the cleaning product off; there's a lot of expensive electronics around that doesn't like getting wet!

P.S. If you have the original 5 pot D5 they aren't noted for oil leaks.

Its still under warranty, so you can either bring it to a dealer or a Volvo Specialist (Just let them know its under warranty)... the warranty won't be affected, as they use Volvo parts. A dealer will be much more expensive per hour comparatively to a specialist.

I'd find an independent Volvo place, you might be able to save some cash that way. I'd definitely get it fixed though.

Hallmark Volvo in Stockport are a good independent Volvo garage, as is Trevor Burgess in Hyde. Google those names, you'll get the contact details. Both are open Monday-Friday, no Saturday's.

Thanks all. I should have been clearer and added. It's not a SELEKT - so covered by a third part warranty (A1 Gold cover).

I've not used one of these before but I have heard horror stories of them not covering anything in the end.

Probably not worth the paper its written on, but hey, you can try...

Speak to them first to see what they'll cover.

Turned out to be 2 items 1. Rocker cover 2. Crankshaft Oil Seal. Both of these items are explicitly covered in their handbook but as suspected they will try and find any excuse to avoid paying out.
Since the issue was recorded on the MoT which was done at the same time, they are denying responsibility under the following terms

"No liability will be accepted for, faults found at the time of service or as a result of the vehicle failing its annual MOT."

Cost to repair is nearly 2K so I'm not going to let this go easily and intend to go to small claims. Anyone have any experience/suggestions with this please?

Wow, that's a great get out clause - we exclude any fault found by someone looking for a fault!

All you have to do is convince them that because of the oil light and warning you were already aware of the problem before the service. They probably have another clause excluding faults found by the car itself though.

Raise a complaint with A1 Approved Warranties.

In the complaint state that you were aware of the fault prior to the car being serviced, and the servicing garage simply diagnosed the fault, which includes two failed items specifically covered by their warranty.

If they still won't play ball, take the case to the Motor Ombudsman.
