Long overdue will speed things up when towing. Save getting stuck behind lorries when towing.

It's already 60 on motorways.
The increase to 50 on national speed limit single carriageways won't make that much difference as most do that anyway.
It's really only the big name retail companies and hauliers who stick to 40 currently.

I agree with Cherished very few keep to 50 never mind 40 on single carriageways so is unlikely to make any difference to traffic flow.

All trucks should be limited to 56 or less but it does not seem to slow some down on the motorways.

I thought trucks were governed to 56?. Foreign trucks appear to go over that.

The only thing I can think of is that the calibration process is more accurate than normal car speedos and their 56 appears as 60 ish on your car speedo, which are normally calibrated up to 10% fast.

I agree that foreign trucks seem to go a lot faster than UK ones.

Call me cynical but the only reason they are upping the limit on the dc's to 60 is currently the police turn a blind eye to lorries sitting on the limiter at 56 as it isn't worth bothering with them even though they are breaking the law.

This increase will mean that the police can officially ignore it without any come back, freeing them up to concentrate on other issues.

Even though they are upping the limits the government is not increasing the speed on the limiters fitted to the vehicles.

They are supposed to be limited to 56mph(90kph) but some companies shut them down to 52 - 54 mph to save fuel. And this is an accurate, calibrated speed whereas a car speedo will be optimistic. The speed limit for trucks on motorways is 60mph but they cannot reach that speed.
At last they are increasing the speed on single carriageways to 50mph from the totally ridiculous 40mph. And that is throughout England and Wales. However, in the forward thinking Scotland this is only going to occur on the A9 between Perth and Inverness where they are carrying out an exercise for the next three years!! Every other single carriageway is still restricted to 40mph. Pathetic. Trucks hardly get into top gear.
This must be the biggest cause of accidents on those roads where a queue very quickly forms behind an Artic travelling at 40mph, frustration builds up and someone tries to overtake when it is not possible to do it safely and bang.
So for you guys down south, appreciate the fact that, at last, a bit of savvy is being used.
