Another vote for the oil burner. Not a T5 but still surprises a lot of people, especially when they figure out its a diesel thats nearly 16 years old !! Priceless.

The TDI is a VAG engine (Volkswagen Audi) whereas the D5 is a pure Volvo unit.
Having driven both the economy on the TDI is better than the D5, as for performance they both 'feel' just as quick as each other.

.....and, dare I say, the VAG unit is probably less troublesome

+ 1 for the VAG TDi unit.
I've never driven the D5 unit but my uncle has one in his S60 and reckons it's a really good engine. There's something about common rail technology that doesn't agree with me though so I try to avoid CR diesel engines if I can. I'm a big fan of VW/Audi, especially the older models and the V70 PH1 having the 5 cylinder VAG TDi unit was one of the deciding factors for my choosing this car - plus I think the PHII models look awful and they have the D5 unit in, and coupled to an auto-box rake in an obscene figure in road duty for the chancelor each year! On a recent steady 100 mile run I managed to achieve an average MPG of 50.9 over motorway, A-road and town driving so not too shabby on economy if you try and the power delivery has on occassion frightened me on a couple of overtaking manouvres. I also plan to join the Jeremy Clarkson appreciation society in the future and will be acquiring a caravan so think the 2.5 TDi unit to be a good choice for the job.

Had a 940 LPT which seems quicker than my 850 2.5 20v, but the 850 IS faster if you rev it.
Haven't driven one but must be the t5 for being the best all-round used car for the price. It can be whatever you want it to be. Amazing. Paul. |

I've only ever driven the 2.5 20v and later 140bhp 2.4 20v
Needless to say the more powerful motor for me But overall, its the characteristic 5 cylinder howl that wins it for me everytime. I'd happily take the mpg hit for it. Also I find, in most respects, the S70 very easy to work on to can save labour money decreasing cost of ownership. Wouldn't mind a go in a t5, secretly I wouldn't mind owning a c70 coupe T5 manual |

T5 for me. I can get 30mpg taking it easy and if the fancy takes me can keep with evo's of the same age, well until a corners involved but then for an estate the 850 holds its own.
I may be bias tho since I love a sleeper so when people try it with my 16 year old shabby 850 they get the shock of there life. The sous chef at work did when his a4 s-line struggled to keep up lol
