AHA!

Thanks for diagnosis.
At least I can stop trying fixes and begin hunt for replacement.

Earlier on lakes breakers were suggested.

1. Is this the best place to try first?
2. Do I need whole instrument cluster or just Speedo?
3. Is it hard to change mileage on replacement Speedo back to what my current Speedo show?

Again, thanks guys for helping me on my Speedo journey.

If there's a place in the country that is most likely to have it, Lakes would be my suggestion. However just to let you know, it's run by two elderly brothers (think they must be in their 80s at least) so be patient while waiting for a response.

Also i seem to recall you said the car was 1991 - you'll need a 1991 cluster, i wouldn't mess about with trying to swap just the speedo especially as it looks like water damage was the cause of death - the other instruments may have suffered the same fate and give up the ghost not long after.

As you don't know the real mileage, it would be difficult to change the replacement speedo so i'd just take before and after photos with the new one on top of the dash for the before and the old one after, a bit like this :

You could also ask Luke (360beast) if he has a 1991 cluster for a 940 as he's broken quite a few.

Hi again!
Just to confirm, to replace my instrument cluster, I must source one from 1991 like is printed on underside of my cluster?
Clusters from other years won’t fit?
Thanks for patience with this Volvo Novice!

Not knowing anything about a Yazaki cluster I cannot imagine that you need one from a '91 specific car. I would have thought that any similar looking Yazaki cluster of the era from whatever model may well fit .... at a minimum you should be able to substitute working gauges between cluster frames .... although I am no expert.

P.S. - Ha,ha ... only just read your above comments Dave.

Yes, you do - Volvo were changing a lot of things from 1990 to 1992, one of them was the speedo drive and ABS systems. Without finding the notes i made (somewhere!) and going through them i can't be specific but there's something about the plugs on the cluster and/or how it's driven with the pulses that makes the difference. Rather than avoid disappointment, i'd stick to finding a 1991 cluster, even if it takes a while.

Also some later ones had paler (dark grey instead of black) instrument faces and Volvo list different part numbers for the 91 to the other years that all seem to be different as well.

Hi again,
Lakes guy was really knowledgeable and friendly. Good advice guys.
Lakes don’t have the exact one I need. So...
1. Where next to try?
2. Lakes suggested company BBA reman. For repairs. Anyone recommend them? Or other repair company?

As usual, thanks in advance guys.

I'd be hesitant to recommend anywhere for repair until those chips are known. Can you post a pic of the top of the chips with the corroded pins so i can cross-reference them to see if they're custom?

In addition to what Dave has said above about the state of the pcb/chip solder joints to me those two capacitors don't look too healthy with their deformed outer shells. I would replace them for starters.

and

It might physically fit but i think even the mountings are different - i might be wrong but i think the early 940s used the same mounting method as the 760/740 facelift and the later ones used a series of clips that had to be poked with screwdrivers to release them. The 1991 740 & 940 used the same electrical diagram as well.

On the back, many connections don't even go to the same plugs, for example the 1991 740/940 uses plug connection L1 for the overdrive warning light and the 940 for 94/95 uses A6 and then they aren't even the same coloured wires!

You might be lucky and fit a 1991 740 cluster will do the job but worth checking the prat numbers first.
