Default New (to me) XC70 2.4 D5

Hello all,

My previous V40 failed the MOT too badly to justify repairing so I have just bought a 2005 XC70 AWD with the 2.4 D5 engine D5244T 182bhp via private sale. On arriving home after the 8 miles from the seller's house, it was clear the left handbrake was dodgy due to the heat and smell. On inspection, the upper show on that side had de laminated. The seller who was an absolute gent for this, came round that afternoon and replaced the shoes with a new set. From the forum, I see that this is not an unusual issue.

That having been resolved, I have a couple of questions:

-What do folk recommend as a service manual for this car? I see Haynes specifically exclude the XC70 from their manual but is it OK for doing engine work, as I'll be doing as much of it as possible.

-This page suggests that the service interval is 12,000 miles, which would be bi-annually for me. Is that reasonable? https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/Di...eIntervals.pdf

-The cambelt (and it looks like the aux but not the water pump) was changed at 88,000 miles. It's now on 170,000 miles which would suggest there's another 18k left- IF you go as far as the Volvo 100k belt life. Who would be happy to put another 6k on it, or would you all change it now? Well, once the weather's a bit better.

Anything else to consider?

Cheers all,

The auxiliary belt, tensioners and idler should be replaced at 5 years/54k miles. If that was done, I’d leave the cam belt until it’s due then do the cam and aux belt together. I did mine a couple of months ago at 182k, it was on the original water pump which was showing slight play but no leaks - may will have done another 100k but I swapped it out for a Volvo pump. Don’t go cheap on belts, water pumps or tensioners.

Hi there, if you intend to work on the car yourself get a VIDA setup - I have found it invaluable, especially as it shows you step by step how to carry out whatever repair you have to do.
