Ok I've had the speedo out and the fuel fudge as well.

The connections are indeed by pins rather than screws, 3 on the fuel guage and 5 on the speedo.

The speedo is as the proverbial door nail, or indeed the dodo.

Now, with the fuel guage I've either fixed it and I'm driving on fumes right now or I've properly finished it off and it's truly kaputt, to the the German word.
Why I say that is this; the fuel guage reads empty but there's definitely power going to it. When the ignition goes on the needle jumps and hovers not quite on empty.

I guess one way to tell will be to put more petrol in!
I'll do that next trip out.

A better pic with things out back together
It's a speed signal +ve output probably to the fuel ECU - losing this signal can cause abnormally high idle speeds esp. on turbo cars.

Ok thanks, good to know.

As far as instruments go nothing had changed with the fuel guage. I went to buy 98ron but failed, I have to travel to the next town to buy it apparently. Next time. I still have no idea how much fuel I have so I might start using fuel containers, and buy 98 ron in them and see how low i can go.
It looks like i need a new speedo and odometer unit sand a fuel guage then. I'll put a post up in the wanted.

Thanks again for yours and everyone's help.

You're welcome and keep an eye on fleabay - personally i'd rather have a complete unit of all instruments as you don't know how "sympathetic" the person was who dismantled them!

Seems the going rate is about £80 for a cluster, make sure it's VDO as VDO and Tazaki aren't compatible and preferably the same year car.
