Handbrake cable, it's the short one, not sure if they are readily ID'd from looking at them, will give VIN No to Parts For Volvo and see where we go.
Car is a '97 940 LPT Estate
Seem to recall the 960 was different.

The swivel thing is OK rusty and the holes a little worn but OK. Never sure if these things should be greased or not as the grease collects grit and that increases the wear. Saw a repair item on the internet, clever idea.
You've already done the penetration bit Tony, it's gone dry now so needs lubricating.

There are a large number on fleabay for about a tenner upwards, depending on year/VIN # and here's one for an example :

Seems the later ones have no outer sheath but that might just be poor diagrams/pictures on fleabay.

Wasn't sure the outer sheath was normal, I've made one up twice on cars using a plastic pipe split length ways and tie-wrapped

Was that on earlier cars?

I'm pretty sure the short cable for live axle cars do not have a sheath no matter what the age is (as implied in the diagrams in post #14). If there is a sheath then I'm sure it's a short cable for an IRS type so that picture is indeed wrong. My advice is to first double check part numbers from a reliable source (see post #18 as a starting point). The compatibility table at the end of this listing states this cable fits cars with live axle and IRS. It can't do both so something is wrong somewhere......

Default Sorted

Sincere apologies for not responding earlier.

Column creaks all sorted after numerous squirts of PTFE from the top by the indicator stalks.

Handbrake cable fitted relatively easily once the clevis pins were freed off. Of course I fitted the inner end first then realised I need to to have some slack to fit the outer end in the drum assembly. Should have looked rather than assume it fitted outside the backplate....

Thanks to all who offered advice.
