But in the auto and top position the short pull should cause the flash and long pull should make the high beams stay on?

In pos 0 you can only flash, in all other positions you should be able to decide if you want flash or locked in high beam.

The 0 position gives you an instant work-around if you want the flash.
Personally I never flash the headlights now especially in London - there's too much danger in doing so such as not seeing a cyclist and telling someone it's safe to turn. |

I cleaned the metal prongs on the stalk and the red part they connect to with a little white spirit on a brush I doesn't appear to have made any difference With the headlight switch at 0 the lights will flash but i don't know what the MOT tester will expect. With the switch at the other two settings they just stay on high beam I've thought about buying another stalk in case and returning it if i don't need it Any other thoughts on what might be causing this? thanks |

Did you dismantel it further than shown on your picture? What you need to clean are the silver contact plates and their counterparts the little silver "tongues" shown on this picture:

I was well confused about the silly lights in this car .. we don't all live in the snow lol
head lights off, they're on Side lights on does what it says on the tin, but stay on and flatten your battery which is a handy little trick head lights on, also on for ages I was thinking what is the point, when off is on and on is on as well. the only difference I found was the operating of main beam now I just leave the lights on permanently, gentle tug (oo er) to flash and pull/click to switch on. unless you click by accident and instead of flash/flash to thank someone you go FULLBEAMTHANKYOUOHGODHOWDOITURNITOFF |

slight tangent that may or may not be relevant..
I went on one of those 'learn to stop driving too fast or we'll give you three points' courses.. twice on said course one of the things they mentioned was that the UK is the only country that flashes people to say 'thank you' or 'go on, I'll wait' . everywhere else they flash to say 'i'm coming through get out of the way' i wonder if that has something to do with why flashing wasn't really top of their list of priorities. having said that the German cars I've owned were fine so possibly somewhat tenuous reasoning |

psh as if you'd request permission to turn from the inferiors
no honestly I used mine all the time especially the one that blinks both at the same time because you're stuck somewhere with yet another sensor fault |
