I wondered about a full wheel arch liner and also mud flaps.

My '90 745 GL has had both from new and I am pretty sure that a '89 model also had the full liners. The trouble is that they get removed for whatever reason and slipshod technicians or other don't replace them.

These two items protect the area behind a turning wheel which was extremely well rust protected in the first place .... in fact better than later 940's.

That's interesting. If mine did have liners, they went missing before my ownership.

What's curious though... I used to have a Sierra, and that did have full plastic wheelarch liners, complete with a lip that protected the flange round the wheelarch. The Volvo has the lip - but no full liner. I haven't worked out how the lip bit works... Also, I can't obviously see any unused attachment points for a liner.

I'm sure all will become clear when I start scraping. Which may not be until the weather warms up a bit!

I'm sure Bob will correct me if i'm wrong but i was always under the impression the liners and lips were one and the same piece of plastic. In other words, you don't get one without the other. If yours has one but not the other it sounds as if part or all the liner has been cut away.

As for the hole in the weld, for the time being, try some Milliput on it :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Put...l/153787599380

It's waterproof and sets underwater so mix a small amount up and push it into the hole. Obviously won't be structural but a quick, easy way of effecting a semi-permanent watertight repair.

I will have a look tomorrow and report back with a pic. Pretty sure my 'H' breaker has the same.

Thanks, bob - will be interesting to see that. I'll try to do likewise with mine.

Not a nice day to be outside so just a quick set of pics showing the wheel arch liner Pt No 1380400/401.

It is bolted on at the front and I assume the same elsewhere but I wasn't going rolling around on the wet ground to discover exactly how elsewhere. It is narrower at the front and gets wider at the back.

I think they were only added on cars from around 1990.

My G 740 has them, but the G reg 760 I broke didn't...

I think mine are missing too. I haven't been out to look yet (cold, and I was working today), but now Bob's shamed me into it...

Ok, not great photos, but did my best. These are of o/s/f.

Front of inner wing, behind battery tray:

And back of inner wing, i.e. driver's footwell:

Spot the crusty seam!
