Drove 340, 740, Toyota Corolla, manual prior to auto. Then looked for a Volvo and Sister found me a 1989 240GLT auto estate for £250. Stayed auto since.

My Dad said get an auto as less chance of being ragged as automatically changes up!

My first auto was when i was 18, a 144 DL auto. Bear in mind i learned to drive in a 2.4 5-speed Skyline (took my test in an MG Metro though) the Volvo was a bit of a culture shock but i loved the auto. Had many more over the years of various descriptions and always preferred the auto - even had a couple of Skyline autos and to be honest, they were just as quick as the 5-speed manual.

Wouldn't go back to a manual now, even if i could.

I've had autos for a few years now and said the same until I drove a 940 auto

What didn't you like about it?

I like beating other drivers off from the lights! By the time they have dipped the clutch and put into gear I'm gone.

James.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzz, that 940 must have been horrible! It's pretty much the same box as Lexus use in the LS400 so gives you an idea it should have been right, if it was as wrong as you say then i'd suggest you dodged a bullet with that particular car!

The AW70/71 in my 760 (again the same box) is lovely and smooth now i've given it a few part changes of ATF and for the most part, changes are imperceptible (up and down) unless either i am hoofing it (even then fairly smooth) or playing jack rabbits on the loud pedal.

Just seemed liked a real delay in gear changes. Compared to the modern 6 and 8 speeds autos it just felt wrong. I'm also used the M90 box in mine. One mans meat as they say !

Definitely something wrong there! Probably needed a serious set of ATF part-changes!

I've not driven the modern 6, 8 or 9 speed autos but i did outgun a new Merc that had one, he was going into 3rd as mine was shifting into 2nd about 35-40mph a damned sight quicker than his thing went from 2nd to 3rd and then i just left him like he'd engaged reverse!

No, why?

He was on the same roundabout as me, trying to show off in his brand new Merc with its loud exhaust and after giving him a head start because the wheels spun a bit, i still went past him like he was stood still because his changed gear twice while mine only changed once and a lot quicker than either of his gearchanges.
This was 2-3 years ago now and i doubt he's got over the embarrassment of a 23-24 year old car outgunning him so easily yet.

Nearest Asda car park was about 3 and a bit miles up the road through at least two more roundabouts.
