Final analysis of distance/cost. We spent £387.04 on petrol, always super unleaded E5. According to my rough calculations based on an average price of £1.70 per litre this equates to about 228 litres or 50 imperial gallons. Assuming about 25mpg (most of the trip was motorway or A roads) that comes to a total of 1,250 miles. This is a bit less than I originally thought but correlates well with Google maps estimates.
The other cost we incurred by driving instead of flying was a night in the Days Inn to split the 9h journey on the way up which was £168 for two rooms. This still compares favourably to flying and hiring a car. It was also, in my view, a lot less hassle than negotiating airport parking, security and car rental. Plus, we got to tour the Highlands in a proper car! |
