Hello,
My car has now had around £1500 spent on it and it is still not right. It's a 2.4i petrol V50 and it has had: A new oil filter and breather assembly A new condensor A new near side anti-roll bar link rod New brake discs and pads A full service including plugs and filters All belts (timing belt kit) New Castrol Oil New Mass Air Flow sensor New Lambda sensor And still it judders over 3000rpm or 55mph... Gutted... |

My sympathies. I've had to spend money righting Volvo's infection of cheap parts and cost cutting.
Was your roll bar link replaced because of a clunking noise? Had mine replaced but it did the same shortly afterwards.

Could be the fuel filter.

If it's fitted with a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) that could be the root cause. If so brace yourself as GSF are quoting the thick end of £450 for the flywheel (and don't have any in stock). Probably double that to have it fitted :-(

How would I know if it was fitted with one of those?

Probably won't be mentioned on the owners manual so options include:
I did a generic search on the GSF site for a V50 and took some guesses at age, rated power etc. so my initial post could be complete ballcocks. |

Think you only get dual mass flywheels in diesel engined cars

More common on, but not exclusive to, diesels due to the higher compression ratios and combustion pressures resulting in higher levels of torsional vibration .....
http://www.gsfcarparts.com/parts/eng...drive/flywheel DMFs tend to be used instead of a heavier SMF and / or a heavier crankshaft and / or balance shafts. Ultimately it's down to maintaining or improving transient response (how quickly the engine accelerates / decelerates particularly under load) whilst maintaining acceptable levels of vibration in the passenger cabin without having bonkers soft engine mounts and thus very flexible exhaust and air intake systems, control systems etc. The trend for using DMFs will continue all the while changing emissions legislation forces engine manufacturers to use larger swept volumes per cylinder resulting in increased levels of TV. Thus we are now seeing a growth in three cylinder engines that are replacing the smaller 4 cylinder engines of 20 years ago. It's a combination of unavoidable physics, emissions legislation and cost avoidance. |
