Talking V70 1999 P80 Auto Gearbox only starts in Neutral

Good evening everyone
I currently own a P80 version of a 1998 Volvo auto estate. Sadly she is smoking badly and the emissions/ignition light has come on. She is using a lot of oil and at 20 years old and 190k miles is possibly coming to the end of her life.

I am going to look around for another similar Volvo (auto estate) and have come across a nice example in a 1999 v70 p80, the only issue is it has an intermittent fault that it won't start/turn over in Park. The owner has had the AA out to it who have said it is a solenoid in the gearbox. It apparently will start in Neutral when this happens.

I've been looking to see if this is an easy fix but can't find much apart from Volvo saying they replace the whole gearbox!! Obviously in a 19 year old car that is under £1000 I am not willing to pay £3k for a new gearbox.

Has anyone got an experience of this or any advice?

Easy fix or don't touch with a bargepole?

Many many thanks 😊

I'd be looking at the PNP switch.
Easy enough fix

Meh, I'd just live with it. You shouldn't be using 'P' to hold the car stationary anyway, use the handbrake it's what it's for.

So, what's P for?

Ha ha Thanks everyone 😂👍

I had a read of another thread about the PNP switch now I know what the fault may be and it seems that moving the year selector up and down 20 odd times (obviously whilst stationary - engine off &#128513 can clean the Contacts of the switch so may give this a go if I do get it.

I suppose my main concern was that it could be a massive fault that meant the gearbox was about to fail or go into limp mode etc. I want a car that will last me 5 or 6 years plus like Ruby my current V70 has. Absolutely love these cars and can't imagine wanting anything else!
