The reason that the system appears to work ok when you're using it is that when you make changes to settings you are doing so in temporary storage (RAM, which is depdendent on having power applied) and this is working ok, so everything appears to work normally. However the same changes cannot also be saved to the long-term storage (FLASH, holding the same data when powered off), because it is damaged, so they cannot be recalled when the system is next started.
That's exactly my point. If the RAM is dependent on having power applied, why not make a permanent power connection to it? Or is that not practicable? G |

If that were a good idea, Volvo could just have changed the fusing for the satnav and left it run continually. I suspect that it isn't a good idea to have the thing switched on all the time draining the battery and staying hot. Put in the hands of a competent electronics technician, swapping out the flash drive is probably not that difficult or expensive.

Also, relying on a permanent feed (+30 in the car) would render all settings lost when work requiring the battery to be disconnected is done on the car.

If you're asking me, no. I don't think that's a practical fix.
Even assuming that the car's battery could reliably sustain whatever level of constant discharge this might represent at rest, and that you won't considerably shorten the system's operational life in doing so, I think it's even money that the SatNav unit would still shut down. I suspect that, like Bagpuss, when it finds all its friends on the MOST bus have gone to sleep, it will go to sleep too. And that's assuming it's not actively instructed to do so. And if it doesn't, I'd still be skeptical about it running continuously throughout the remainder of your ownership. I doubt that its software was built or tested on the premise of it running continuously, 24x7x365. It will hit a glitch and restart itself from time to time. Thanks all for your input - and patience with a golden oldie who went to school with a slide rule and log tables! (Never could get to grips with computers).
I guess I'll put up with the inconvenience and rely on my trusty Tomtom. G |
