Default Car Buying Advice

Hi from New Zealand,

We have
1997 960 225,000km and
1999 S70 180,000km - time to upgrade.
S70 drives very well but has many faults showing on dash which come from module issues so I will keep this as around town car rather than try and sell.
The 960 is the car to replace. This has Tow Bar and new car will need same.

I would really like to buy a V70 but can only find:
2008 130,000km, 2.4ltr, Red, Sun Roof & Leather.
2007 131,000km, 2.4ltr, Silver, Fabric
Both NZD7,000
or
V50 2.4ltr 2006 ranging 105,000km NZD5,500 - few available
V50 2.4ltr 2008 77,000km NZD7,000

Viewing posts I understand the V50 is not as comfortable for long drives.

Appreciate some advice on what to go with - V50 or V70.

Ideal car is V70 3.2ltr engine but these are priced around NZD15,000 for 2007-8 models.

Thanks, Bill

A V70 will be a better bet than a V50 if you want comfort (and load capacity). I ran a V50 for nearly five years and now an XC60. The XC60 is much more comfortable, so I would expect the 70-series to be likewise.

Thanks Nigel,
Will try for V70. Problem is Volvo have become more popular since we bought our current cars and the used price is not as good as once was

A V70 with a 3.2 motor sounds sweet, Bill, was that exclusive to NZ?

We now run a V70 (2.4 petrol) after many years of 745 ownership. While we prefer RWD, the V70 is slowly growing on us and is certainly a very comfortable car for both passengers and driver.

I'm afraid that I have no experience of V50s, so cannot comment on them, but I wish you luck in your search for a replacement for your 960. We looked in vain for a nice 965 / V90 before settling for the V70 - maybe things are different in NZ?

Regards, John.

Obvious thing to do is try both, V50 not suitable for long drives...define long drive ?

SH1 in NZ is only 1200 miles ! I had the use of a new V50 from Volvo when they were new and found it fine, likewise our V70 P2. It does depend on the model...e.g big wheels + shallow sidewalls = discomfort.

No, you can get them here too, sat between the 2.5T and the T6 but they are rare.

I loved my XC70 for long drives but my V50 is just as good, just as comfy and slightly more fun to drive to boot. With 16 inch alloys the ride is great, not V70 plush, but better than likes of an Octavia/Astra which is what it competes with.

I've got 3.2 XC70 and it's quite a sweet 6 cylinder lump, but would have preferred a T6 had I found one with LPG already fitted.

Thanks for all the advice.

Yes, New Zealand roads not that long. We call 3 hours a long drive.

Spent Saturday looking at cars in Auckland - our largest city.
Drove a V50 2006 125,000km and very impressed with value for money.
YV1MW6649162186
Asking NZD4,900. No Reversing Camera, Cruise Control or Tow Bar but still good car.
Would be good car to replace S70 for my short drive to work and around town. Next year maybe as S70 still has miles to go.

Looked at Red 2006 V70 Classic. Appeared made in Belgium.
YV1SW614982683925
130,000km Drove well but not Cleaned for sale and appeared "basic"
Cruise Control, Sun Roof but no Tow Bar or Reversing Camera.
NZD6,995 - black oil on dip stick and wiper rubbers breaking.

Saw 2008 3.2ltr V70 but appeared over priced at NZD11,000.

Settled for a Hyundai Grandeur 2006 104,000km full spec and in very good condition NZD4,995.

We are still Volvo fans and plan to buy a XC90 in 2 years.
XC90 appears better value 2nd hand than V70.
The cost of a good V70 will just about buy the same year XC90.

We like the luxury of our 960 and only the Grandeur could provide that for our budget.

It is good when you can purchase a car that provides the drive and safety desired and others have already depreciated it for you.
The 960 and S70 did that for us but the current market does not allow a V70 to do this.

Thanks again for the advice.

Most of these cars are 2nd hand ex Japan.

Never seen a 765, 965 or V90 in New Zealand.
I think the NZ Dealers have new V90's
