Manual to Electronic Climate Control

As above, has anyone swapped from a manual system over to ECC ?? Volvo seem fairly good at putting a full loom in their cars covering most options and wonder if it's possible as getting a donor car in with most options including ECC !!

This has been asked a few times before, not sure about the 70 series as they were better equipped with wiring but I think it's a fair old task to do on the 850s.
I'm sure there's a couple of videos on you tube one of the guys was an Ozzie and he replaced part of the dash loom.
That obviously means a dash out job.
If you were going to be replacing an AC evap or replacing a badly cracked dash then it's do-able i suppose but in my opinion not worth the bother.
The only way you could do this on realistic budget is to go to the breakers and strip out the dash and loom.
That side of it isn't too hard but very time consuming but at least if you break stuff on the scrap car it learns you to do yours without busting stuff up.
Some of the parts that spring to mind that would be required, reduction motors,air duct sensors,sunlight sensor,fan controller,interior temp fan/turbine sensor and of course the full auto climate loom.
Not a job to take lightly

I did it on mine (850).
It is pretty straight forward on the 850 as the loom is separate from the rest of the loom of the car.
A breaker is the cheapest option for sure, instead of buying all the parts separate.

Note that if the car had no A/C you need to also swap the REC motor as it is different on the ECC or manual A/C version.

There are 3 looms one which goes into the dashboard to the sensors (the holes are there only covered with tape), one which goes to the motors, and one for the ceiling going to the 2 sensors.

You should take out the dashboard which gives you very good working space. The 2 motors in the back which regulate the temperature a little annoying to install due to little space the rest is no problem.

It is also wise to install the motors exactly in the positions from the donor car otherwise you will most likely need to calibrate them.

There is also a loom which contains the compressor relay and provides power to the blower fan which needs to be replaced.

PS I would use the opportunity to replace the evaporator if the A/C system does not hold the gas for more than 1 year.

Mine is 1998 V70 classic Cristian with a/c and the donor obviously has ECC - I am also doing an interior change so the dash will be coming out anyway which is another good reason to change over is do able 😆😆 Will keep you posted !!
