Default 2011 v50 1.6 diesel

Hi

I’m looking at buying a 2011 v50 1.6 diesel r design. It has 39000 miles on the clock. I believe it’s the 8 valve engine and not the 16 valve. I have been looking online and have heard some horror stories regarding the turbo and dpf. Are these problems just on the 16 valve or does the 8 valve suffer as well. The vehicle has fsh but ham very wary as don’t want to buy trouble. Would appreciate any advice.

Cheers.

I had a 2009 V50 DRIVe. Nice car, except for the cost of the DPF replacement at 72k. With the normal service the bill was over £1000. Not nice, especially when I wasn't expecting it. Check the exact engine and service actions in the Volvo Service Price Indicator.

Sounds like low mileage for its age. Sometimes if diesel cars don't do enough miles the DPF can get clogged. Try test driving it, see if dark smoke comes out of the exhaust when you thrash it.

Good choice The turbo issues on these were fixed donkeys ago, it’s not an issue per say until you fill them with the wrong oil, or suction it out rather than letting it drain with gravity. It’s a blockage of the oil feed pipes to the turbo, and only something prevalent on the early 16 valve units. There have been people moaning about the turbo’s on more recent cars but it’s misinformation the overwhelming majority of the time. The wet DPF is a service item, due for replacement at 75k with EOLYS fluid in a bladder tank behind the right rear wheel arch liner needing filling every 37.5k miles. More often than not these intervals are surpassed as they are worst case scenarios. Be prepared if you are looking at a 16 valve car to budget for this; you may never need to spend the money, but if you do, you’ll be ready. The later, dry DPF fitted to the 8 valve is a less complex system and usually maintenance free. The cost of new DPF’s and OBD scanners has dropped through the floor since the first of these engines came out of warranty 10 years ago so the cost of diagnostics and rectification is substantially less than the internet armchair mechanics would have you believe.

On an 11MY car, it should be an 8 valve unless it’s a very late reg that slipped through, if it has 6 gears it’s an 8 valve; if it has 5 gears, it’s a 16 valve.

Mine was a 16-valve, 5 gear model, hence the expensive wet DPF replacement. See post #3.

I've had my 1.6 8v D2 since March this year and the only DPF related issue I have had is the sensor pipes corroding.

oilfiltercap by Pete, on Flickr

I've ran a DPF test and all was well with it.

It had 62k on it when I got it and now is at just over 78k. No further problems.

FSH is good. Do you have a link to the car which we could have a look at?
