1998 V70 T5 oil change hangup
Hi all
Changing the oil on my 1998 V70 T5 Filter is the metal can type. I drained the oil, put the drain plug back in, was just about to remove the old filter then found that I didn't have a correct new one. I have put in the new oil for now because I want to be able to use the car tomorrow if I have to. I haven't run the engine yet so it will still have the dirty old oil in it and the new oil wont have been contaminated much yet. Question: Once I have obtained a new filter, if I remove the old filter, how much oil will I lose? ie should I go to the trouble of draining the new oil or just swap filters? Or maybe I should drive it for a while with the old filter and then do it properly next time? Steve

Just change the filter , you will probably need 0.5 to 1 L to top up , if the level is right on the dipstick at the moment.
Put it on. Run engine. Let it settle and top up, preferably over night, but 15 minutes ok , if not to warm. |

As far as I know the only oil you'll lose is what is in the actual filter, probably about 0.5 litre as roger said (plus half a teaspoon full in the pipe leading to it if we're pedantic), most of the oil will be lying in the sump when the engine isn't running. I'd change the filter when you can get hold of the right one, it's not ideal to change the oil, run the car, then change the filter, but I don't suppose it will do any harm, after all there's always some residue of the old oil left in the sump and oilways so even after an oil change as soon as you start the car that bit gets mixed in to the fresh oil.

Thanks all,
The new oil level was below the halfway mark. I took the old filter off and put the new one on, with a pile of rags underneath, and probably lost no more than 1/4 litre. I'll get a new oil drain plug for new time, this one is getting rounded off. Steve
