Yet more Classic funny noises

Re: my V70 2.4 10v Classic auto.

On my previous thread I mentioned an intermittent grinding/whining noise coming from my Classic. It stayed intermittent and my garage thinks it may have been water from my leaking radiator on some of the pulleys. We'll see.

Onto the present and no sooner had the radiator been replaced then it now has a clunking sound when I take my foot off the accelerator. It is loud and quite disturbing. At first I thought something was caught under the car or snagging one of the wheels or brakes as you can hear something catching when the window is down . Nothing.

If you drive normally it is fine but as soon as you take the foot off it starts a repetitive clunking sound on the front o/s.

My garage is perplexed. Any ideas?

And to top it all it is now misfiring and driving on 4 cylinders. Hopefully just a new coil pack.
I am wondering whether I should part company after 19 years ...

Agree, shouldn't be too difficult to trace. Only had mine 11 years and she's costing me a bit resently but I won't get shot of her.

Simple things first,,

Check the wheel nuts are tight, also driveshaft bolt, once had a scarey noise or one of our volvos- turned out the surport c clamp that attacahs/supports the drive shaft was not there at all,
Its 19 year old but sometimes better the devel you know.

I got the news today.

It turns out the o/s front wheel had come loose. It wasn't about to drop off but never in 30 years of driving have I had a wheel come loose.

Is that a common thing?

I had two new tyres put on at the end of December. Would it take 6 weeks for it to work loose or wasn't it tight in the first place?

On top of that I had a worn engine mounting replaced so hopefully that's it for odd noises.

It means I'll hang on to it for now. Still drives really well and so comfortable on long journeys.

No it is not common, but wheel nuts should always be checked for torque after a couple of hundred miles following a wheel change. How many of us actually do? I try to, but do not always remember.

Happened to me twice about 6 months apart. The first time was a few weeks after replacing tyres even though I'm anal about wheel nut torque. The second time there'd been no work done on the car. After that I ran it for 4 years without it happening again.

I went on a course years ago on vehicle loading/overloading, if you are overloading a vehicle the weight is pushing down then outwards to the wheels and their nuts, once the vehicle is unloaded their is less strain on the nuts, over a cycle of running loaded and unloaded- this is what causes them to come loose (apparentley).

Had this happen to a customer, turns out some muppet thought it would be funny to loosen his wheel nuts !!
Offender was seen on his neighbours cctv camera at the car one night.
The original insuation was we had left a wheel loose.
Customer was good enough to let us know though.
Whats super important is to make sure the wheel slides onto the spigot nice and easy without any corrosion of the alloy making it tight so that the bolts are torqued accurately.
