Xc60 electric tailgate
Hi folks
Hoping you can help, I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this one I have a dec 2011 xc60 r design with the powered tailgate The drivers side strut has snapped inside the plastic sleeve Volvo tell me I need to replace both struts, then have it coded, at crazy cost Another mechanic tells me I can just replace with gas struts But I've also been told you can't replace the powered struts with gas ones Does anyone have any experience of this? Cheers Steve |

I'm sure I've read a few posts on here of this happening.
I would insist that Volvo make a contribution as a tailgate should be expected to last longer than 4 years, shouldn't matter if it's out of warranty as its not fit for purpose. Good luck and let us know how you get on. |

Cheers guys
I'll try them, has full Volvo history so I'm hoping for some goodwill Although I bought from independent dealer I can find info on software issues etc but not anything on broken struts It would also seem you can't buy Volvo parts from anyone in the uk apart from Volvo! 430 +vat for 2 struts... Breakers? Should be a part that survives a crash.

I had a faulty strut replaced under warranty due to getting very noisy, was told by dealer that they had to replace both. Don't know why but if Volvo are replacing both at their cost there must be a reason.

Hi Steve
This is the only aspect of my 2013 XC 60 that is a bit hit and miss, it is erratic in behaviour and is quite noisy I think it may be on the way out, It wasn't something I would even consider but it is actually quite handy Ash well, due for a service soon and still under warranty so will get it checked out |

I'll try a few breakers and see
I had a v50 which was great, then I went bmw, which was a great car too, the xc60'is a fantastic jeep but I'm just not sure the quality is there.... Whatever happens I'll have to get it fixed as I'm surviving with no boot! Cheers |

At a guess if the power strut the one that does the work lifting the tail gate goes it might be assumed the passive strut is not helping support the weight when the tailgate is open forcing the power strut to work harder supporting the weight when open. Hence they replace both.

As its 2012 model I think they are both powered
As an update Spoke with dealer who said no good will, customer service said speak to dealer, pay for diagnosis, and then they would make a decision Even if they offered 50% I'd still be better fd just sorting it myself I've asked my independent dealer to get parts at his rate, then he will fit them for me I haven't really got time to mess about fighting for any offer Bit disappointing that coverage of a known issue comes down to "brand loyalty" as they put it Thanks for replys Cheers |
