Default Car Cover or no car cover

I do not have any storage facilities for my 88 GLT. Wondering if I should invest in a car cover or not. Heard they can damage the paintwork. Any thoughts?

They trap the moisture against the paint which then causes microblistering in the paint. My mate is a painter and he always tells people to not put a car cover on their cars especially when it has been freshly painted.

my spitfire is under a halfords car cover at the moment, took it off the other day and the car was wet. if you have room have a look at the folding garages, might keep moisture off better than a cover that touches the car.

Even the more expensive, breathable covers cant prevent condensation, even more so during the last 2 weeks of Autumn and early Spring when the air is much more laden with moisture.

You can mitigate this some by not tightening the underneath straps too tight, a known mistake by many cover users, its not a second skin, just a cover, air needs to circulate, under the cover

I think any kind of lean-to car-port type structure is much better. Even a well-built garage attracts condensation.

In my experience an old windy corrugated barn or shack works best - somewhere the wind whistles through on a rough day. That's why barn finds last so well.

I have a carport, mostly enclosed, small gap on the left along the top (about 8") and obviously, the front is wide open, I do not get any condensation at all, no frost either

the wind will constantly rub the cover against the paint and scuff it !

the paint will be the least of your worries,
the interior will suffer badly with the trapped moisture too

I have seen plenty of cars with a mouldy interior thanks to covers

Also if the car is under a cover you are less inclined to tend it. If it is just parked then you can open the door occasionally, leave it open on a warm day, start the engine once in a while and run it up to temperature, move it a few feet .
Under a cover you forget it, it's too much bother to untie, it just sits there for months rotting and seizing slowly.
