Default brake lights

940 2.3 se 1994 estate. Rear drivers side brake light has stopped working and as usual shows fault on the dash when pressing on the brake peddle. Has anyone had this problem, and any thoughts on how to fix at a reasonable cost, or other wise. all I've found so far is people pointing to the lighting relays which I've found might be a case of dismantling the centre console and sarounding parts to get at the relays. Any advice would be welcome.

Without wishing to sound rude or sarcastic , have you tried replacing the bulb ? . If the bulb still lights & you are getting the failure light working , remove the bulb circuit board & clean all the connections where the multiplug fit & each bulb socket . Also make sure the earth connection onto the body is sound , clean & tight , as a bad earth can also cause these problems along with other bulbs flashing in time to your indicator lights .

I am sure that the only relay connected to the indicators is the flasher unit , please try the above remedy & let us know how you got on

Steve

Thank you for your advice. I should have said in my initial question that I have tried 3 good bulbs and cleaned all the connections in the light cluster, and still no working brake light. That's why I am thinking about there being a bad relay.

Have you got 12 V ish at the bulb holder with the pedal pressed?
Frequently issues like this are down to a poor earth which often shows up at the connecting plug for the cluster as a corroded earth pin and other bulbs in the cluster lighting faintly when they shouldn't - the so called disco lights effect.
I don't know if that car has a single or twin relays for the brakes. If it's a twin set up then swapping over would eliminate them if the fault stays put.

You only have a relay to switch a heavy current i.e. startet motor , spotlights , heated rear window , air con pump . If one side lights when the pedal is pressed & the other remains off , you have one of the following problems A) broken wire , test by prodding dress making pin through insulation & test with multimeter for voltage . B) coroded connector plug C) corroded connector on bulb circuit board D) broken / damaged bulb circuit board . All can be tested using a multimeter to check for volts along wiring or continuity along circuit board .

Not always the case, the P2 S60/V70 has a relay for the brake lights despite their relatively low current consumption.

The fact the bulb failure is working would clearly indicate that "IF" an relay was fitted , neither side would light up . So logic would clearly once again lean towards a broken wire , duff circuit board or a lack of earth to the right hand circuit .
