Question S40 (II) 1.8 Petrol '05 – Erratic Idle When Warm and

Good day to you all. I am requesting advice relating to an idle problem with a Sep ’05 S40 with a 1.8 petrol engine.

When stopping at junctions or in traffic the revs will drop to around 200 rpm before going up to a more usual idle of around 800 rpm (1,000 rpm when cold). Sometimes the idle can be a little bit erratic and fluctuate between 800-950 rpm and over the past couple of days it has started to stall.

This morning I checked the throttle body and it looked nice and clean but I gave it a prescribed measure of throttle body cleaner anyway. Cleaning helped immensely for a few minutes after cleaning rpm in general increased by 100-150 rpm and is now (after a 15 minute drive from a parents house with a big warm garage) dropping to around 250 rpm when stopping with a steady and non-fluctuating idle of around 800 rpm.

This dropping to around 200-250 rpm before picking back up when stopping is giving me cause for concern as I am sure it isn’t normal so I want to get it fixed before it gets any worse.

I found the following posts in the forums relating to a C30 which sounds like the same issue: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...18#post2310118

I have had similar under following conditions:-
engine cold
driving along to roundabout and dip clutch a bit 'early'
revs swing from 500ish to 1500ish, then slowly settles to 1100/1200

almost as if the engine mapping can't cope with the change in revs from 1500/1800 to lift off?

It seems Ok most of the time

mine's an 1800 petrol 57 plate

Confirmed as a faulty throttle body assembly. Managed to get a new one off eBay for less than £100 and it has been fine since.

Apologies for the late reply on this but I am going through all my old posts and making sure I posted a reply so it can be closed.
