This problem appears to be due to a faulty Boost Pressure Sensor, giving a 'Signal too high' error in the Motronic ME 9.0 engine ECU.

At idle speed the BPS was registering a 'boost' pressure of 1,060.0 mbar against an actual ambient pressure of 991.0 mbar (verified against weather report).

Under full boost the pressure would appear too high and the boost would be dumped via the wastegate (I presume).

Going to replace the BPS and clear the fault stored next week....

Easier job than TCV!

(Sensor plugs into the intercooler - bump off job, for anyone who wasnt sure!)

I always get really confused looking at standard boost for these T5's

So many people say different things.

Looking at VIDA, standard boost for our LPT T5 (B5254T3 (220bhp) is 0.38bar which is around 5.5PSI (see attached)

Yet most on USA forums and some on here say it's 0.6bar/9psi is standard.

I'd assume Volvo is obviously correct, so why is everyone else's 'standard' cars running higher?

Really need to plumb my boost gauge in and work out what mine is doing.

I'd better tell my man, his Bosch equipment said the access was through the offside Fog Light enclosure...

Funky - I always thought 0.7 bar was our standard boost (about 10 PSi).

Not according to Volvo :P

Found a few other threads stating standard psi is around 6 which is just over 0.3bar.

Weird!

Oh, yeah well I have seen 0.6 bar on my TorquePro thing, think it touched 0.7 once but to be fair 0.6 seemed to be quite hard to exceed so I guess its right.

I think the all-round confusion about boost pressure is also due to various units used - some use Bar, some Psi, some mbar and Vida itself report it in hPa.
I know its all easily transferable but I guess adds up to confusion... On top of that there is a huge discrepancy between average and peak boost, some may refer to first one, some to latter. If someone say "max boost" just because torque app registered 14Psi for a split second (happens to me) doesnt really mean its true.
Dont remember stock Psi myself - would guess from memory its 6-7. On s1 map my car registers 10.5 - 11 psi on long WOT, but its all related to IC temp and external conditions etc etc.

Oh and Welton - yes, BPS is mounted in knee going onto IC from driver side. In my case it was accessible and visible trough foglamp cover but it MAY differ on FL car. I really doubt its "bumper off" case, maybe just access from lift?
1060 hpa is a lot for ambient air pressure, thats true, had a quick look at all my logs and most were recorded in 990 - 1000 hPa reported in Vida as ambien pressure and in any case the "ambient" and "boost" pressure in the beginning were identical, but I never checked it against actual weather channel or something. Also it makes me wonder, if ECM registers both values - Ambient air pressure and Boost pressure, are both coming from the same sensor or not...

anyway - let us know if it halped! fingers crossed!!!

Thanks for checking your readings Lizard, it points to my BPS reading high for sure.

Some manufacturers include an ambient air pressure sensor within the ECU (my old Mazda had one) and this was so that if the driver took the car to high altitudes the ECU would adjust the fueling to suit. Maybe the Volvo sensor is also inside the ECU.

The new sensor is fitted, just waiting for him to test it, to be fair I told him to take his time and fit me in around his other jobs as I have the use of our Twingo anyway.

Looking forward to feeling the restored boost under acceleration

Keep us updated.

Tempted to replace mine as I've had slight hesitance occasionally, some days it's great others not so much. Replaced TCV last year so that's fine.

Probably should clean my throttle body as well as that's been done and not long rolled over 100k on the clock.

I did a boost log this morning on torque pro but their online web viewer is down at the moment so I can't check anything!

That's how my car has felt for a good while now, sometimes feels more eager than others until recently where it's had very little boost and just felt more like a NA engine.
