Default 2005 1.8 petrol Belt or chain

Hi Chaps,

Looking at buying a petrol 1.8 s40 2005. Can anyone advise if this is belt or chain driven?

If it’s belt driven I take it that it’s the standard 120month/100k miles interval?

Thanks

It's chain driven.

Look out for excessive oil consumption if you are buying a 1.8 petrol.

Default Definitely chain driven

Hi,
Same engine and same age of the car. Definitely chain driven. Can't comment on oil consumption - my one simply doesn't do that. Engine extremely easy to work on, that is a big benefit and advantage.

it is the same engine as in the MK2 Ford focus and even the same one as you can find in some Mazda cars.

1.8 is chain driven and it does not suffer from chain strech as you probably heard horror stories about stretching and rattles. I have a 1.8 with 150k+ miles on it and the chain is never changed nor it has any problems with it. It will last the lifetime of the car.

I don't have any oil consumption problems either. The facelift models (post 2007) don't have this problem anymore either. If you buy a pre facelift 1.8 you are best off checking the oil consumption since some cars (bad oil and long between oil changes) might have higher oil consumption.

very solid engine, easy to work on. LOTS of space underneath the bonnet.

Good engine oil needs topped up frequently but still goes well at 180thousand miles
