Getting AWD working asap is a no brainer. Never mind if you never even take on some slippery grass or mud.
My spline drive went phut rendering me front drive only and I can tell you the XC90 is not a happy beast being pulled by the fronts alone. Pulling out of junctions and traction around slower roundabouts is hugely compromised as the fronts really struggle to pull all that weight, It simply wasn't designed that way. Once I got the spline drive sorted low speed cornering was slip free again and I could accelerate out of junctions confident of not scrabbling and slipping at the front. Sharing the load must save a ton of wear on tyres and suspension components too.

Just to add to this the suspension set up on FWD and 2WD cars is quite different. On a 2WD car the spring settings are sometimes softer at the front but the anti-roll bar is much stiffer to try and achieve a more even weight distribution when cornering (and reducing the likelihood of spinning the inside wheel). The downside of this is the impact on ride and comfort. With AWD cars the priorities are different.

Hence AWD cars with broken AWD are compromised in certain circumstances.
