Did you order that 17mm female bit?
It doesn't look like you can do much without it..

Does anyone know if this gearbox fluid counter reset is actually necessary? What is it's purpose? Loads of people on here including myself haven't bothered doing it, with no ill effect....

Purpose is:
Gearbox electronics monitor temperature of fluid over time the car is used.
Based on that, they will calculate when oil is technically "worn" and you should change it.
Now, it not impossible, that soon after oil change the "gearbox service" light will come up.
Its simply electronics "thinking" that you are still on old oil, and it reminds you that its time to change.

Very similar to your annual service reminder- have you ever done servicing and few weeks later had that reminder popping up? Same principle.

By resetting it, you are informing the gearbox that its running on fresh oil now, and counter needs to come down to 0 again.

Of course it brings a question "why not to change oil when car asks for it, then?"

Because usually it will be too late.

I find that particular feature of gearbox nearly completely useless.
My oil was thick mud at 230k miles and it wasn't asking for new.

So.. Reset it once. At any oil change. Even if only to avoid that "gearbox service" light.

Oil is here
Washer is here
O ring is here
Tools are here

I have everything ready to do this next week.

1 problem, on the right hand side I don't have an air housing to remove to access the hex. I have what looks like the ECU. Any ideas how I can remove it to access the fill hex?

Now this is strange.
Every but every single D5 V70 (with exception of phase1) has an air filter there.
Deeper, towards windscreen there is smaller black box, and that's one of fuseboxes. You don't need to remove this one.
Its the bigger black box, closer to front of car that is the air filter.

Exception in phase 1- these had battery in front of air filter too. That's all.

Can you upload a photo of your engine bay? Look up my post from 2-3 days ago, about uploading photos, make sure you do it on your laptop.

When you say "on the right side", do you mean right side of car? Because gearbox is on the left.. Unless I'm in upside down universe/in reference to yours.

On the right hand side as your looking at the car. (Opposite side to the timing belt)

I can't get access to my laptop at the moment.

Try this

Hmm, don’t recognise that control box, but it’s mounted on the air box lid, so should just be a case of unhooking the 2 cables and continuing as previously advised.
Can you attach a clear picture of the label on that controller?

Mines the earlier engine and manual, so I may be wrong!

Just looked at a picture on eBay of an engine bay of a similar model, and it looks to have electronics in the same position as yours, but with a cover over it.

As reggit said.

And in the meantime (interlude):
What's the current breaking capacity of a 32amp breaker type B by MK?
Something you should know from the top of your head

In addition:

IF it comes to unplugging that box.
Please do homework and read some about sequence of disconnecting/reconnecting car battery.

This is to avoid various fault codes, including "faulty airbags"

As any proper job- do it properly, with knowledge, and it gets done in no time.
Start cowboying around ant it will turn costly.

I wouldn't call it a crash course in gearbox maintenance.
More like crash course in Volvo ownership

What you're experiencing is one of big reasons I keep my car.
Learning something new every day.

Think how much you'll save in garage costs...
