Just for the record, what do I need to run the radio on the workbench?

Are there standard plugs available and is there a pinout diagram anywhere?

did you have any success with this repair?

i figured it may be a better idea swapping for a double din radio but that seems like a real bag of worms - satnav, dolby, steering controls, phone. i have them all and one by one i seem to find issues with aftermarket radios, and each of these features.

so it looks like a repair is the only practical solution. unless anyone has any further advice.

You can also swap a used HU-650 unit, preferably one from the same year. Connecting a HU-650 should be the reverse of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGQJWxoc5aE - there should be another connector + a DIN one hidden there behind the unit that would plug into the HU-650. The HU-650 will not use the amplifier or the center speaker, but should sound fine otherwise. The HU-650 also has only 1 CD. The car battery must be disconnected during such swap.

I have come to the conclusion that the HU850's are rubbish. My CD player has never worked and just says CD error. There seems to be many complaints all over the internet about HU850 failures. This company seem to be able to fit aftermarket radio's which will connect to all the steering wheel modes but they are very expensive so as of yet have not done anything. https://www.cartronics.co.uk/volvo

Following this with some interest, mine often cuts out on all radio, pulling the fuse a few times gets it back, but it’s am and fm that goes. A little bit of me suspects the amplifier in the boot or a loose connection to an aerial. It’s an S60.

That's exactly what mine does in my V70.

Sometimes I can turn the radio on and nothing, then as I'm driving along it comes on. Sometimes it cuts out whilst driving and switching between bands or stations fixes it. Sometimes it cuts out and I can't get it back by doing anything, but the CD changer and GROM (on the 10CD changer input) always both work fine, which makes me think it's not the amplifier, but possibly the aerial circuitry or a dry joint somewhere on the PCB.

Yes, CD always works. I’m tempted to get a cheap lead for the back from eBay and just use my phone to listen to it..

I had a spare hu850 (not working) which I have got the following identification for the integrated circuits on the main board. Sadly it looks like the audio switching is handled by a microprocessor rather than a discrete chip...

My HU850 has also started experiencing the sporadic FM radio issue.

Is there a known repair for this? If so, who can perform it?
