Rattle from rear caliper
My car (54 plate V70) has an annoying rattle from the n/s rear caliper which I think is the pads, loose in the caliper, as the noise goes when I apply the foot brake. I have replaced the pads which cured the problem but only for a short time. Is there anything that can be done to stop this rattle, without having to replace the caliper ? Thanks

You only need the pad to be out by tenths of a mm so good fitment is key as is thoroughly cleaning/wire brushing all contact points on the caliper, caliper carrier and pad.
I would only use genuine Volvo pads or ATE who are the company that make pretty much the entire Volvo braking system so the obvious question is what make are the pads?

It will be the anti rattle spring.
Either lost its tension or incorrectly fitted. Each 'prong' must be in the caliper holes, the outer 'wings' against the carrier faces, with the long back piece tucked behind the carrier protrusions/nubs. What often happens is that either people dont tuck the long back piece behind the carrier nubs/protrusions or the spring gets distorted by age or hamfistedness, both leaves a gap between the spring 'wings' and the carrier faces allowing the caliper to rattle about. Mine was like this when I bought it, drove me nuts with window down, only just got round to sorting it when I did discs/pads. Bent it back into shape. Done loads of these in my time, theyre on vectras and many other things too. Last edited by AndyV7o; Jul 18th, 2019 at 22:11. |

I had this exact problem after cleaning the caliper carrier to much. I fixed the problem by making some anti rattle shims with the lid of a sardine can 😁 sounds mad but it worked. You just need to cut out a slit in the middle so it tucks in where the disk goes, and the pads just sit on top of it

Don't discount the handbrake shoes/springs inside the rear drum, these rattle if they're not quite fitted correctly or if the springs have lost some tension.

Agreed on the handbrake shoes.
The handbrake shoes can make a big clattering noise if they are really loose. |
