That is interesting blue blubber, mine does the very same thing.
I had thought it was a transmission issue and hadn't gone down the engine mount path. I will investigate. |

I replaced the top engine mount last night with an OEM part.
I did a before and after test of moving the transmission between D and R to check for movement in the engine. There is some movement, but it doesn’t look terrible, having said that I don’t know what it should look like when working correctly. After changing the mount I couldn’t notice any real difference in the amount of movement, maybe a tiny bit better? When I get a chance I will try and check the lower engine mounts.

Just to clarify, when moving between D and R the engine shifts position slightly and then moves back when I move it to the other position.
This happens along with a bit of a judder.

Update:
I replaced the transmission mount ( connects auto box to front subframe ), this part was well worn. Also replaced the engine ‘pad’ ( engine mount behind right hand drivers side wheel ), this part looked to be in good condition, but replaced it anyway. Unfortunately the car still has the same symptom. The clonk sound/judder always co-indices with the gearbox changing gears, which it usually does very smoothly, except in the narrow circumstances mentioned in my first post. The only engine mounts that haven’t been replaced are the round front and rear ones. Any suggestions on what else I can do to try and solve this issue?

There should be a good 10-15mm gap between the two. If the engine/gearbox is close to or resting on the subframe, worn mounts are the most likely cause.

There's a rubber buffer attached to the subframe directly under the gearbox and nothing should be resting on it.

Have you tried rocking the engine manually to recreate the sound?

No, but I can try that. Do I just try and rock it by pushing/pulling it with my hands and see if it makes a sound?
