Surprised you clamped the hose though, this generally isn't needed on callipers now as they shouldn't leak. Maybe you damaged the hose which is resulting in the sponginess.
Clamp, which I believe wasn't effective anyway, was as per the Haynes manual and the master cylinder rubber valve protection theory!

Discs were fine, the sponginess is diminishing, if not gone altogether. I am now worried about the springs as I have fitted them as in the photo I screenshot off the web in a previous reply.

the discs were worn hence your problem , the pads are bedding themselves into the concave discs now ...

Thanks D3GGY, I think this is what is getting me confused. My springs are sent up as yours are. If you look back at the screenshot pic I posted it makes sense visually - but as ever I am here to be corrected.

Those disks are ready for replacement, looks like a large lip on the outer edge. I’m guessing you were doing them hence the photo with the wheel off.

Yes it's a still from a video where I overhauled the rear brakes and handbrake system.
