Default Changing power steering fluid

Hi
Is there a technique to flush and change the power steering fluid on a 1995 volvo estate?
Is there a drain plug, or do I need to disconnect a hose? What’s the capacity of the system?
Can you tell I’m running out of jobs during lockdown!
Many thanks,
D

Given how cheap ATF is by the gallon Dave I have never done mine properly, would guess it is messy and removal of the line not easy otherwise

Instead I use a silverline suction pump ( recently doubled in price due to the typical profiteering known as covid 19 ) pull it out of the reservoir then do it again 6 months later

I know not ideal but given I have looked at dozens if these motas and the fluid is always black take the view my half way house approach better than nothing at all

I was reasonably confident irrespective of how you do it this is a messy job !

Depends how quick you are with the end cap and how much fluid you manage to suction out of the reservoir before pulling the line. Certainly has the potential to be very messy and there will always be some spillage.

i think what you are trying to say is not half as messy as having to replace the rack iif a typically very poor fluid change regime has been adopted !

As a related comment and one which might need a new thread, has anyone fitted a filter into one of the PS pipes?

Derek no - I was seriously tempted a couple of years ago for obvious reasons and never got round to it

Seem to recall filter was Yankee or Oz and on the face if it pretty easy job to fit. If you go down this route would very much appreciate an update

I've not been able to collect my V70 yet due to the lock down but have been perusing the forum. See here, scroll down.

Thanks for all the advice and the picture tutorial was very useful and I followed it to successfully change the fluid.

I don’t contribute much to this forum, but I wanted to share a little addition to the procedure that worked well for me.

I cut the top off a 2 litre plastic bottle and used a cut off finger from a rubber glove to join it to the power steering reservoir using cable ties to create an extra reservoir.

I then filled it with fluid and cranked the engine. The new fluid was drawn through the system with minimal spillage.

Hope that helps someone.
