I cleaned the joints and smeared them with CV joint grease. and put some on the boot to help slide it on.
I only replaced the boots in the end as upon checking the track rods with the boots removed there wasn't any play.
The boots were only £7.50 for the pair I bought the bailcast universal ones in the end and managed to get them over the track rod ends without removing them, was a bit fiddly but use the cone they supplied and plenty of grease and got them over the joints with a bit of effort. I also put them in boiling water first to get them even more flexible.
They were clearly thinner than the boots removed but they have a 2 year guarentee and if they last that long I will be happy I needed a quick and cheap fix (another time it will go into the garage). I couldn't be bothered to remove the track rods after the faff of reaching the boots.
