Cool

If you are down South any grade from a 0w40 to a 10w40 (A 15w40 is OK in summer) is fine, up North an 0w40 or a 5w40 is better in winter. North of the Artic circle an 0w30 would be best in winter.

The 1.9D holds 5.6 liters of oil and the recommended max OCI is 15K km (It was reduced from 20K km), but with an older diesel or one that is used for short tripping I would change it every 5 or 6K miles.

The oil filter is approved for 20K km and a dirty oil filter is more efficient than a clean one, so if you change the oil every 5K, it's possible to do alternate oil filter changes. Cheap oil filters can fail (The elements split), so use a real Volvo one, or at least a Mann or Bosch one that is made in Germany.

If you are a long term owner use a major brand full synthetic. It should have an Acea A3/B4 (Or B4 only for a diesel oil) spec. Turbo bearings are very sensistive to poor lubrication, so the quality of the oil is far more important than it is for a normally aspirated engine.

Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 seems to be the cheapest major brand full synthetic and in technical terms is slightly better than either Edge or Mobil 1, mostly because it has a base stock made from natural gas.

Some Volvo dealers use Castrol Magnetec 10w40 in the UK (It was the original OEM spec oil), although the German Volvo dealers use Castrol Edge 0w40 which is a better oil and the one listed in the Castrol oil guide.
