Sadly it sound very much as if the bearing and oil seal is going on your turbo

Checking the pcv system wouldn't do it any harm mine had only done 58000 miles and the pcv system was completely blocked solid

Turbo is on its way out. Sooner or later it'll go bang and you'll end up with impellor wheel either out of the exhaust or sucked back into the engine.....whichever happens is luck of the draw.

Because you can also get light smoke from unburnt fuel, how can you tell this problem is the turbo?

....it may simply even be condensation in the exhaust especially this weather!

Even though the engine temp. may be up to normal just feel the end of the tailpipe also after a run and you will be surprised how cold it can feel!

The exhaust system on the X40 is quite large and long curving....

Cold exhaust system + hot exhaust fumes = condensation / white smoke...

Check your engine temp. guage reads 90/92 or in the middle!
