Boing!
3 or 4 times during the past 2 months, my car has emitted a BOING sound, as if a strand in a very tight wire snaps under tension. It seems like it's coming from the engine bay area, but hard to say. The strange thing is that it happens when just driving along gently; no shifting gears, no throttle movement (to speak of), no cornering forces worth mentioning. Any idea what this could be? Car is S40, 2011, 1700 miles.

That's weird, mine has done quite a big BOING only once, and like you I was just going along slowly minding my own business.
I thought I'd got a snapped coil spring but nothing was evident. I also wondered if it was the spring settling itself after a previous sharp turn? these cars have a very tight turning capacity.
