Default Track rod end spining whilst trying to do up

Trying to do the track rod end nut up to pull it back into the hub carrier up and the nut is going nowhere.

I have tried hitting the track rod end with a club hammer with a jack underneath and tried a G clamp but it isn't working and I don't want to use the hex fitting underneath because they have disintegrated.

Any ideas, this the 1st major (non service) job on the Volvo and I wan't to scrap it is a pig to work on compared to other cars I've owned.

There's normally some need for a counterhold when doing these up.
I'm unfamiliar with yours but it sounds like the disintegrated hex is your counterhold so if it's knackered you may need a new track rod end.
A photo of the problem would help.....

Does it have an allen key depression on the top as many of them do these day for the reason of your problem.....might be full of crap so you cant see.....alternetivly if you say youv'ed jacked it up and its still spinning indicated to me the thread it too tight so I would recommend trying a new nut or run a die down the thread or both
Hope that helps
Good luck!!

Thanks yes the key underneath is knackered on one and packed with crud on the other.

I managed to get one side back on just now the only thing I hadn't tried was cleaning the thread, hole and taper and it seemed to make the difference I kept it clamped with a carefully positioned G-clamp allowing enough room for the socket and managed to get it tight enough to pass through the nylon of the ny-lok nut.

Will leave the other for another day as I still have to replace all the heat shields and that will be a long job

with the knackered side, is there any way you could grind a cross into the head (with dremel or small angle grinder) to get a Phillips screwdriver or something in there instead of an allen key?

Put a jack under the track rod end and apply sufficient pressure to lock the taper on the track end into its housing. Tighten ( or remove ) nut.
Simples!

Salut!
