Question 06 V70 D5, no rear lights???

Stopped on the way to work early this morning to grab something from my boot and was a bit surprised to see I had no rear lights on whatsoever, no tail, side LED nor number plate light, I’ve no idea if this is a new issue as such or if it’s been like it a while.

No warning message on the dash, the indicators work as do the brake lights, the headlights were on and moving the light switch made no difference, I’m going to check the fuses and relays when I get home.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Check the wiring loom where it passes from the body to tailgate, you may have a broken wire or two, and greetings from a fellow Newcastle under Lyme resident.

I was wondering if it’s something to do with the tailgate perhaps although I wouldn’t have expected it to affect the tail lights - number plate certainly - I waggled the tailgate up and down to see if anything flickered (having experienced a similar issue on a different car) but nothing….

Greetings from Silverdale!

I'd second this and if all lights have failed it points to a break in the earth. Check this by temporarily bridging the harness with another wire between one of the lamp clusters and a known good earth e.g. the battery -ve.

Well, I’m completely stumped!

Just got into the car after work, started it up and the rear lights are back on again!

I did wash the car last night but didn’t subsequently drive it so perhaps some water has got somewhere it shouldn’t have, that said, I’ve checked behind the panels in the boot, the wheel well etc and can’t see any sign of moisture, nothing in the light lenses either, I’ve washed it plenty of times before with no issues so I’m not convinced it’s that.

I guess my only option is to keep an eye on it as it’s hard to diagnose a fault that’s for the moment at least, no longer present.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully it was some weird one off….
