Stones trapped in brake disc guard
My colleague at work has a 2006 V50, and a gravel drive, but every so often stones get lodged in and around the disc guard, making a terrible grating noise. Has anyone experienced this?

Just last night! Makes a terrible noise alright. I was just about the call the RAC as I was well off the beaten track at night and had no means to loosen the stone. However, after a couple of quick starts and stops it seemed to release the pebble ... and I was on my way.
Antidotal evidence would suggest that the S40/V50 car's seems susceptible to this happening. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has a more guaranteed method of removing the stones when one is 'on the road'. I have considered carrying a large screwdriver with me to try and wedge the brakes open but I'm not really sure how to do this! -- tigerbalm |

Had this before (some very strange looks from pedestrians as I squealed past them like a mobile version of that scene in Jaws with Robert Shaw and the blackboard) but whatever it was came loose as soon as I reversed a short distance.

Yes I've had this twice. Strangely enough on exactly the same stretch of rough gravel drive. It sounded as if barbed wire was scraping the disc but on both occasions could find nothing. Second time I had both fornt wheels off but could still see nothing obvious. It went after a few miles.
However, there is a Volvo tech bulletin about the brake disc shrouds being too close to disks resulting in the chance of smething getting caught. The dealer will adjust/check at next service if car is still in warranty (for nothing -that is). |

solution
one solution is to cut about one inch of the lip of the gaurd on the bottom, this will allow any stone etc, to exit from between the disc and gaurd.

Stones in brake shield
I had exactly the same problem ... I took delivery of V50 2.0D SE at beginning of January 2007; with Winterpack, sunroof and rear park assist (for my wifes benefit, of course!!) .... with just 42 miles on the clock ... a horrendous screeching noise came from front of car.
Initially, I was following a Toyota pick up truck and assumed that was where the noise was coming from ; it wasn't until I turned off that I realised it was my car at fault!! Volvo Direct was consulted and an RAC man appeared ( within 15 minutes ... he lived just down the road!!). He asked what the fault was, gave a knowing nod and said .. "my father in-law has one of these .." ; whereupon he produced a screwdriver, prodded the near side brake disc shield and, lo and behold, out popped a 4 mm diameter stone. The same problem has arisen a further 3 times since then but has been resolved by judicious braking and reversing. |

And its stil happening - with Glasgow potholes throwing up stones, icey slush blocks all over the road it seems both sides are started grating today. Will get out a large screwdriver tomorrow morning (if its warm).
Very very annoying fault. |

I'm pretty sure you can remove that disc guard entirely, It might double up as a spacer but a few washers will sort that. You need to take the brake disc off and its held on by a handful of screws.
