I guess the insurance is cheaper because its not usually something a young person would drive, i was in a 1.4 MG ZR and the insurance was horrendous, besides nothing can beat the comfort and refinement of the S40, well possible one without the sport chassis -.-

Ok, this is what I get out of a 2.0t:

Motorway at 65mph with cruise control and a full boot: 42mpg
Motorway at 70mph, full boot: 39-40mpg
Around town: 26-32mpg

Not too bad.

I've had as high as 40mpg on a long run and 36-38 average when I first got my T4 and was scared of using any turbo lol.

Now it seems I've forgotten how to drive economically. Got 33 combined out my last tank with a reasonable amount of heavy driving but have seen as low as 26 when pushing it for most the tank

OMG so I'm not the only one. Haha.

I get similar figures with a passenger:

45mpg with cruise on 64mph.
42mpg with cruise on 70mph.
25mpg with cruise on at 130mph.

Town? Lol = 24mpg tops. But that's because I live in the crappiest part of London so I'm not at all surprised.

Depends on what people define as 'best..." I've had a bunch of S40's and from my experience, yes, the 2.0T has been the "best" on fuel. It revs much less at the same speeds in say a 1.6 / 2.0 would. And you can overtake much quicker without having to put the pedal to the metal. The 1.6 I had was the worst, how people commute on the motorway in one of those is beyond me. I think I had to sit at around 3-3,500RPM's to keep it @ 70mph.

If you are not at all bothered about power then of course the 1.8 officially returns 2mpg more then the 2.0T.

For the sake of the extra HP though it's a no brainer if you can afford one. Given the only other petrol above the 2.0T is the T4 I stand by it being the best on fuel as the T4 is a bit lower than the 2.0T in terms of mpg

Agreed.

Correction... "for the sake of a much much better car."
