Default Amazon estate fuel tank anyone?

I have been having some fuelling problems with the car. it runs, revs and drives then dies.
I have ruled out pump, lines and carbs.
so the fuel tank must be to blame. I have had no joy cleaning the tank. so its new tank time.

I though i came close to finding a new one on BASTUCK
(http://www.bastuck.de/shop/index.php?cat=30000&hg=32300)

but no joy. so lets make our own, how hard can it be...

Looking at the original i don't fancy messing around with the curves, So I made a template from ply and test fit into the car.

it even fitted into the car first time!

I found a local company that can hydro jet the 2/3mm stainless and another who can weld it all together. the fabricator is also happy to make the filler neck.

After some measuring, i used SketchUp to produced a DWG and 3D model.

will hopefully have the sheet metal next week.

Excellent work!

Did you consider increasing the capacity of the tank? One of the (few) things that really annoys me about Amazons is the measly 45 litre tank.

If you could make bigger tanks for the 2/4 door models, then I'd buy one off you in a flash...

a) did you make that one up or have someone do it for you? or b) is it standard and you made it fit? Difficult to tell from photo, c) I can't make out where the new tank is situatedis d) and that is a plate covering the hole where the standard tank would go?
e) What is its capacity?
Would be great to know
Best
Jamie

Hi,
It was custom made in Fife, Scotland.
It fits in the rear bulkhead, behind the rear seats in the boot area.
Yes, the plate covers the old tank void in the boot floor, it now has a post fitted to it to retain 2 spare wheels & tyres.
100ltr capacity.

some pics of the tank before welding.
The tank is made from 2mm stainless and the top is 3mm. I was going to go for 3mm for everything but I'm glad i didn't. the 3mm section is surprisingly heavy!

Tank is nearly a complete success. Think i need a better breathing system as its painfully slow to fill as the pump keeps cutting out.

I ended up sniffing around few different fabrication shops before being donated a stainless 2" pipe for the filler, it was thin wall so it had to be reinforced at the base.

I didn't take any pictures, but i made a foot from copper clutch line that went to the bottom of the tank to the outlet.
