I would say 40 minutes a day commute is enough to keep battery topped up,

Dealers can see what driving cycles the car does in relation to battery performance and the average state of charge of the battery since the last battery reset,

There has been issues with flat batteries in the early days but the endless software updates cured this,

Dealers can do battery automatic battery test on vehicle but in order to do this there is a few parameters that have to be met and if any software updates are done prior to the test then it resets these parameters and the car has to be left locked up for at least 4 hours before it can be performed.

Default V90 recurrent battery problem

See my post on software and battery issues. I had similar problem asked dealer to check battery after a no start recovery. They downloaded new software and created more problems. They eventually tested battery and replaced it only 6 months old!
Dealer says he needs to do Volvo Diagnostic test to get paid by Volvo.

Test print out has 2 stages - charge battery for 5 mins in car and check
Load battery for x mins and check.

No actual details of load or voltage on print out or from dealer - computer says!
Dealer said mine failed at first test.

When the service manager got interrupted turned computer print out over and tech had written test 1 and test 2 took a long time and a third line that I couldn't read.
Recovery guy says they are being called out to lots of Volvos with battery issues.

Watch this space!!!
